Unusual intimate part odour happens in every woman and at different ages, women will experience this at least once in their lifetime. Even when you’re taking good care of your body and your intimate part, you may experience unfamiliar smells. What’s not normal, however, is reoccurrence and the change of discharge odour and colour (Yes, it is normal for women to have discharge from their intimate part!)
A healthy intimate part’s typical scent may best be described as “musky” or “fleshy.” A menstrual cycle might cause a slightly “metallic” scent for a few days. Your intimate part cleanses itself naturally. If you leave your intimate part to its own devices, it can naturally maintain a healthy pH and keep unhealthy bacteria at bay. But if you notice strong odors, itching and irritation, and unusual discharge then these are the tell tale signs you may have some intimate part irritation or infection.
Fishy intimate part odour
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common intimate part infection among women of childbearing age. When something upsets the intimate part’s complex chemistry, harmful bacteria can grow out of control, producing a foul fishy odour.
Some women with BV experience other symptoms, such as itching or burning, which may feel like a yeast infection. For many women though, the smell is the only symptom.
Healthful habits can also reduce the risk of BV. Those include:
- Avoiding tight or non breathable underwear (especially of materials like lace, satin & silk)
- Not using scented or flavored products in or around the intimate part. Perfumes and other products, such as scented tampons or sanitary pads, can alter intimate part chemistry and cause BV.
- Limiting the number of sexual partners and practicing safer sex. While BV is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI), multiple sexual partners can upset the bacteria balance in the intimate part, exposing one to intimate part infections as well.
Sweet or beer-like intimate part odour
A yeast overgrowth in the intimate part can produce a sweet smell reminiscent of honey or cookies. The intimate part might also smell like beer or some alcoholic scent might be present.
Sometimes the odour smells sour but it can also be pleasant. A pleasant aroma accompanied with intense burning, itching, or feelings of dryness usually notates a sign of yeast infections. They tend to get worse over time, and some women may notice a discharge that resembles cottage cheese.
People can treat these infections using over-the-counter medicines. However, a woman experiencing her first yeast infection should talk to her doctor to rule out other causes.
Other odours
Hormonal changes during menopause may alter the scent of the intimate part, and leave the intimate part feeling dry.
Some STIs, notably trichomoniasis, may also alter the smell of the intimate part. Any shift in intimate part odour, particularly if the smell is strong or unpleasant, you must immediately seek medical professional help.
Normal intimate part discharge is thin, clear, or milky white and mild smelling. It is really uncomfortable to have a recurrence of such foul smelling infections, not only can it affect your self-esteem, your work, it might even affect the relationship between you and your partner. The only real solution is to restore and maintain your body’s delicate balance. Sometimes your body can do this on its own, but when it needs a little help, there’s ENCORE Like V.
